Edinburgh gets the knee high boots treatment

One of my oldest friends is getting married, so last weekend a large group of us headed off to Edinburgh to celebrate her remaining few weeks of singledom, and to let our hair down in style.

We’re old friends from university, and many of these beautiful women share my passion for gorgeous footwear. We had a full weekend of activities planned, which gave me huge scope to show off my famous, ever-expanding collection of knee high boots to the rest of the girls.  I agonised for ages over which boots to take with me, when I realised I could only squeeze four pairs into my hand-luggage alongside other essential but boring items. Needless to say I turned up at the airport looking like a flush-faced Russian doll, wearing pretty much every item of clothing layered under my winter coat. By the time I got to airport security I was sweating profusely in the large crowd – luckily one of my friends came to the rescue when the security guard asked me to remove my knee high boots. I was wearing so many clothes and we were giggling so hard, I could hardly bend my body to get to the zip.

The first evening we headed into town for a night out. I pulled on my beautiful suede Genova boots, which I teamed with a little black dress. Lots of the others wore knee high boots too and we even had a mini ‘how to wear it’ boot-spotting competition. Have you ever noticed how the further north you travel in the UK, the less girls seem to wear when they go out? In Scotland the blue-veined capital of Europe – where the wind bites harder than a highland terrier – the bonny lasses are skipping down the street in the middle of winter wearing skimpy tops and knee high boots over bare legs!

I was not even vaguely tempted to try this look, so on the second day we headed up Edinburgh’s Calton hill for a brisk walk in our thickest winter coats to clear our hangovers. I tucked my jeans into my fleece-lined Brindisi knee high boots and stayed warm as toast all morning. The rest of the day was spent exploring Princes Street, which, recession or no recession, is always going to be a shopper’s paradise.

Knee high boots
are still everywhere in the sales, and I was especially excited to visit the DUO store in nearby Castle Street. I indulged in a two hour fitting session, trying on all their new styles. I showed incredible self-restraint and only bought one pair, a delicious chocolate coloured over-the-knee boot style called Greta.

This left me with one small problem. Even I had to admit that no matter how determined I was to wear eleven layers of clothing home on the plane, sadly I can realistically only wear one pair of knee high boots at a time. So next stop: the world famous Jenners department store, where I am happy to report that they sell a large collection of suitcases.
