1. WHAT ARE COOKIES?

A cookie is a small file that is sent to your computer when you visit a website. When you visit the website again, the cookie allows that site to recognise your browser, and thereby informs the site of any user information or preferences previously that you set when you last visited the site. In this way, website owners can provide more personalised, tailored experiences on their websites for their users, and improve the service that they offer. The information stored will make your usage of the website easier and faster because it allows you to use our website without having to re-enter information on every visit.

Cookies also maintain the visitor’s identity during a single visit to a website so you need only log in once and the cookie will allow you to browse away and back to the site, without having to log in again.
Most browsers accept cookies automatically, but usually you can alter the settings of your browser to prevent automatic acceptance if you wish to.

Cookies cannot harm your computer, and they also do not pose any risk to your security, as we do not store personally identifiable information such as credit card details in the cookies that we create. Cookies are not able to retrieve any information from your computer that you have not already given to a website, and cannot be used to put malware or viruses on your computer. Furthermore, cookies are not able to be used to control the functionality or settings of your computer.

There are two different types of cookie as follows:

  • Session cookies - Session cookies are deleted after each 'session'. For example, when you are browsing a DUO site, the cookie will remember you for the duration of your visit, but the cookie will be deleted from your computer as soon as you close down your internet browser. Without a session cookie, every time you open a new web page the web server where that page is stored will treat you like a completely new visitor and items placed in your shopping basket will disappear by the time you reach the checkout. Also, functionality such as ‘Recently Viewed’ would not be able to function without session cookies.
  • Persistent cookies - Persistent cookies remember you for a set period of time. For DUO, this period is up to a maximum of 6 months (unless you delete your cookies within this period). On your first visit to a DUO site, you will see a default version of the site without any personalization. Over time, you may notice that the site changes in terms of the content you are shown, as persistent cookies remember items you have viewed and preferences you have selected. An example of a persistent cookie on the DUO website is one called “public_delivcountry” which remembers the delivery country you select for your order, and presents this country as the default next time you visit.
For information on how to manage the acceptance of cookies please see the ‘Managing cookies on your computer’ section of this policy.

You can also get useful information on what cookies are and how to control your browser’s cookie settings at the following website: http://www.aboutcookies.org (opens in a new window - please note that we can't be responsible for the content of external websites).

2. DUO'S COOKIES

To make full use of the online shopping and features on duoboots.com, whatever device you use to access the site (computer, tablet, mobile phone) will need to accept cookies, as technically the site relies on the cookie technology in order to deliver certain features.

Cookies allow us to present you with relevant products and services that are based on the way that you want to use our website, providing you with an enhanced browsing and shopping experience.
For example, cookies allow us to remember what shoe and calf width and foot width sizes you searched for last time you visited us, what products you left in your basket, and what language site you were visiting the last time you visited duoboots.com.

Cookies allow us to work alongside our web analytics partner, Coremetrics, to see how our customers like to use our websites and which pages or special functions they prefer. This helps us to continually improve our website based on the real preferences and behaviours of people visiting our site.
Third party cookies are also used with our marketing partners to present you with appropriate offers and advertising as you browse other sites on the internet, based on the products you looked at while on our site.

Our cookies, and those of our third party partners, don't store sensitive information such as your name, address or payment details: they simply hold the 'key' that, once you're signed in, is associated with this information.

3. THIRD PARTY COOKIES

DUO uses cookies to help third party advertisers and publishers serve and manage DUO-related adverts across the web on our behalf. In this way, we use cookies to display a particular advert to a particular visitor based on that visitor’s past browsing activity on the DUO website. DUO will not disclose your personal details to any third parties. All data collected is anonymous and will not contain your name, address, telephone number, email address or IP address.

These third parties may place anonymous cookies in your browser so that they can collect browsing data (such as the products you have viewed). These cookies will allow the third party to serve advertisements containing products that you have looked at and similar products.

Advertisements will always include a link to the third party privacy policy page that will include information for users on how to opt-out of being cookie retargeted. If you wish to opt out of receiving such advertisements, or if you would like to receive more information on why you are being retargeted, simply click the 'i' which appears in the top left hand corner of every advertisement.

Another way that you can opt out of behavioural advertising cookies is to go to the Network Advertising Initiative website and opt out of any active cookies that you can see are stored on your computer.  Click here: http://www.networkadvertising.org/managing/opt_out.asp (opens in a new window - please note that we can't be responsible for the content of external websites).

More detail on the third party ad networks with whom we work, and ways of opting out from behavioural targeting, is given below:

Third party name  What their cookies are use for, and how to opt out
Criteo Criteo Technology may place anonymous cookies in your browser. These cookies collect browsing data, such as the products you have viewed while on the DUO website. This data may then be used by other website(s) in their network to serve DUO advertisements containing products that you may have looked at or similar.
Advertisements will always include a link to Criteo's Privacy Policy page. If you'd like to opt out of ad targeting, or would like to see more information on why you are being retargeted, simply click the 'i' which appears in the top left hand corner of every advertisement. Alternatively, if you wish to opt out of receiving Criteo advertisements altogether, please go to http://www.criteo.com/us/privacy-policy (opens in a new window - please note that we can't be responsible for the content of external websites).
Specific Media Specific Media may place cookies in your browser. The purpose of these cookies is to tag that you have interacted with the Specific Media network before, and therefore show you the most relevant advertisement when browsing other sites in the Specific Media network, based on your prior activity.
Specific Media is a member of NAI, the Network Advertising Initiative, a coalition of online advertising networks that provides an opportunity for consumers to opt-out of targeted advertising by member companies.
If you prefer not to see online advertising tailored to your interest profile, you may opt out at any time from all NAI member networks by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative at http://networkadvertising.org/managing/opt_out.asp (opens in a new window - please note that we can't be responsible for the content of external websites) or the Internet Advertising Bureau at http://www.youronlinechoices.com/uk/ (opens in a new window - please note that we can't be responsible for the content of external websites). Opting out will place a cookie on your computer which blocks the use of targeting. Please note that as with any cookie, if you delete your cookies, change browsers, or use a different computer, you will need to opt out again.
Alternatively you can opt out of Specific Media’s user interest targeting cookie by clicking the OPT OUT button within the Opting Out section of the following site: http://www.specificmedia.co.uk/privacy (opens in a new window - please note that we can't be responsible for the content of external websites). Please note that if you delete your cookies, change browsers, or use a different computer, you will need to opt out again.
It should be noted that opting out does not mean you will not see adverts online, but these adverts will not be targeted based on your online user interest profile from Specific Media as an individual vendor.
